Best Baby Lotions To Keep Your Baby’s Skin Soft And Safe
Do babies really need lotions and moisturizers? Well, the answer is not a straightforward Yes or No. Rather, it depends on a large extent the climate where you live and the baby’s skin type.
When I go with my son to my hometown in Kerala, which has a wet tropical climate, I find that applying coconut oil once or twice a week is more than enough to moisturize his skin. On the other hand, at Bangalore, thanks to the dry climate and hard water, and we have no option other than frequent oil massage or daily application of moisturizers to prevent his skin from going dry.
Our pediatrician was of the opinion that unless the baby has extremely dry skin, applying coconut oil once a week is more than enough to keep their skin soft, provided you use a good soap. Even experts from Mayoclinic have the same opinion—they suggest no lotion after bath for newborns and in case of extremely dry skin to apply unscented moisturizer only to the dry areas.
Moisturizer Or Lotion?
Yet another confusion that most parents have is whether to use moisturizer or lotion. Moisturizer is a broad term to categorize all products that moisturizes the skin, including water, lotion, cream,Vaseline etc. However, in reality, people use the term moisturizer to imply creams that are thicker compared to lotions. So, loosely we can infer that lotion is nothing but moisturizer with more water content. As lotions are of thinner consistency, it can easily be absorbed in to the baby’s skin. But on the downside, lotions have more water content making it prone to spoilage. Hence, manufacturers add more preservatives and scents to lotion. For this reason, it is always advisable to prefer moisturizer to lotion.
